John Ehiri, PhD, MPH, MSc, professor of public health and chair of the Department of Health Promotion Sciences at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, has joined the University of Arizona – Banner Health team as the data tracking and evaluation core lead for the National Institutes of Health’s All of Us Research Program.
With more than 20 years of experience in global health, Dr. Ehiri uses behavioral science and mixed-method approaches in program design, implementation and evaluation. His expertise includes the implementation and evaluation of public health prevention interventions among adolescents in low- and middle-income countries and in sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Ehiri’s research and teaching focus is on the social and behavioral aspects of disease prevention, and on global maternal, child and adolescent health, including HIV prevention. He has served as principal investigator of university-wide grants to facilitate global health education and research, and has facilitated the establishment of primary health care programs in less-developed countries. He provides technical assistance on maternal and child health issues to national ministries of health, non-governmental organizations, the United Nations and bilateral agencies.
Dr. Ehiri has authored and co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, in addition to writing a book and contributing to numerous book chapters. He currently serves as co-investigator and director of evaluation for the Student Transformative Experiences to Progress Under-Represented Professionals (STEP-UP) research training program. Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (1R25CA217725-01), STEP-UP works to increase the capacity and number of minority scientists engaged in cancer prevention research nationally.
In addition, he served on the evaluation team of the UA’s NIH/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute-sponsored program to Increase Diversity among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE) training initiative.
The PRIDE program provides advanced training in an interprofessional environment to qualified candidates from backgrounds underrepresented in the biomedical sciences who are committed to addressing heart, lung, blood and sleep health disparities through impactful research.
